Copernicus Marine at the 22nd International Weather and Climate Forum

Date: 03 June 2025

The annual Climate Media Workshop, part of the 22nd International Weather and Climate Forum, will take place from 6 to 8 June 2025 in Nice, France, at the European Digital Ocean Pavilion. This year’s edition, entitled “Communication of the Impact of Climate Change in the Oceans: Knowledge, Tools and Perspectives”, is organised by the Copernicus Marine Service, Mercator Ocean International, and Forum Météo et Climat.

A Global Gathering for Ocean and Climate Communication

The International Weather and Climate Forum is an annual event that brings together weather presenters, meteorologists, and journalists from around the world. It fosters dialogue on how best to communicate the impacts of climate change, leveraging the unique role of weather broadcasters as trusted public communicators.

This year’s Climate Media Workshop will be held at the EU Digital Ocean Pavilion, implemented by Mercator Ocean International on behalf of the European Commission. The Workshop is expected to welcome more than 100 media professionals from 74 countries and will feature a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and online participation. Sessions will be held in English and French.

Better Understanding Ocean Changes through Media Narratives

The three-day workshop will focus on the Ocean’s role in the climate system and the tools available to support impactful communication on climate-related Ocean issues. Experts from Mercator Ocean will contribute multiple sessions and highlight the global relevance and impact of the Copernicus Marine Service.

Day 1: Diving into the Digital Ocean

The first day will explore how satellite and in situ observations are combined with advanced digital models to create a real-time understanding of the Ocean – the foundation of a digital Ocean.

  • Pierre-Yves Le Traon, Scientific Director at Meractor Ocean, will provide an overview of the Copernicus Marine Service, including its structure, data offerings, tools, and applications.
  • Other sessions will cover Argo floats, swath altimetry, ocean-atmosphere forecasts, and the EU Digital Twin Ocean.
  • A roundtable discussion will explore the future of digital ocean applications globally.

Day 2: Climate Change and the Ocean

This day will highlight climate change media communication related to the Ocean. The sessions will provide an overview of key ocean data and indicators. Topics will include: plastic pollution, weather extremes, and the 8th Copernicus Ocean State Report
Experts from the European Space Agency, Météo-France, and Mercator Ocean will discuss how satellite observations and digital indicators are used to detect and understand changes in the Ocean.
A dedicated roundtable will bring together scientists and journalists to exchange ideas on effective communication formats and messaging strategies.

Day 3: World Oceans Day

The final day will mark World Oceans Day with awareness activities. The Seaties Initiative, a new international coalition of coastal cities committed to resilience and adaptation, will be introduced by the city of Nice.
